Social Impact

Challenging the Status Quo of AI

Inter(mediate) Spaces is a response to the increasing disconnection and bias inherent in modern technology. By prioritizing community-driven data over proprietary "black box" algorithms, we foster a more inclusive and transparent digital future.

The project operates at the intersection of art, technology, and social justice, using immersive media to reclaim agency in how our digital and physical environments are designed.

01

Challenging AI Bias

Popular AI systems are often trained on datasets that lack diversity. IMS challenges this by introducing data and collaboration from diverse groups around the world, ensuring visual landscapes are a true reflection of the communities they represent.

02

Intergenerational Connection

In Montreal, we collaborated with the Lee Association and Jia Foundation to bridge the gap between generations, using digital tools to preserve the history of the Lee Association building and engage younger members.

03

Empowering Digital Agency

We believe technology should be a tool for empowerment. Through our "Reflections" workshop series, participants shape their own digital environments, becoming active co-creators rather than passive consumers.

04

Migration & Belonging

IMS explores how we create meaning in places where we may not have deep roots. It provides a platform for stories of migration and belonging, using VR to bridge the gap between personal history and present location.

Rooted in the personal history of migration, IMS explores what it means to create meaning and community in new or changing landscapes. Whether in Berlin, New York City, or Montreal, the project provides a platform for people to connect over shared stories of displacement, discovery, and belonging.

Community Voices

“Chinatown shop owners are often depicted by people from the outside looking in rather than by people from the inside... [These tools have the potential] to empower everyday people to tell their own stories.”

— Karen Cho, Montreal Living Lab participant & Filmmaker

“I think the only thing that can create a counter today is community. I think these tools are potent, as are people, when they decide to use their powers... The simple fact of seeing who else is working on it, as real people, that’s the strongest thing.”

— Tim Summers, Berlin Living Lab participant

Our Commitment

Led by our Community Impact Producer, Megan Hattie Stahl, we are committed to ensuring that every Living Lab is accessible, inclusive, and provides tangible value to the communities we work with.
